Interacting with Seniors Experiencing Grief and Loss

Many seniors have experienced the passing of loved ones in their lives, such as friends, family, and significant others.

When talking to a senior who has lost someone:

  • Validate their feelings

  • Invite the senior to share how they met their loved one

  • Ask the senior to reflect on fond memories

While it’s important for seniors to express their emotions, our hope is that you set a positive conversational tone and leave the residents in a happy mood. 

Steer the dialogue towards more light hearted topics by asking seniors about:

  • Life lessons their loved one may have taught them

  • Moments they are grateful for

  • Future experiences they are looking forward to
